I am an Engineer by profession and I am currently working with Wessex Survey & Design Ltd UK. I will be coming to the state for the next one year and during my stay, I will be working with Black & Veatch Incorporation a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company specializing in infrastructure development in energy, water, telecommunications, management consulting, federal and environmental markets.
My sole financier that is based in the States will be handling the rent deposit payment on my behalf, I will instruct him to send you a Certified Check for this as soon as you give me the go ahead to make out payment to you. Due to the limited time that we have before our arrival, we are making arrangements with a furniture company to supply the home with furnitures,so we will need you to provide us with the the following:
# Measurements of the living room and bedroom.
# Picture viewing the living room and the bed room(s).
# As regards the lease agreement and application, I want you to send it to me for my review. I will eventually have it filled and signed on my arrival in your place as I am of the opinion that such documents are best filled and signed physically by appending signatory at best physical. We can start the lease by asap and I will be doing a one year lease. You can prepare the lease in my name.

This is happening at a high rate. I posted a rental on Craigslist on Monday night and received the same message (practically verbatim) from someone named Derek Robertson (derobertson@live.com) using the same story and contact (Phillip Lennox). Look out!!!

I too got the same response to a Craig list ad. His name is now Brian Keane….It sounded too good to be true so I immediately started to do some digging.

I posted an ad on Craig’s list on 8/23/09 and received the same e-mail the very next morning. Craig’s list is becomming notorious for scammers like this. They agree to rent something from and UPS or FedEx a check to you. Then you get an e-mail saying their “accounting office” made a mistake and sent you more money than the rental. Then they want you to western union the difference back to them. But by the time their check clears your bank and gets returned as fradulent, your money is gone. You can almost tell by their sentance structure and their use of key words like “the states” and they are always in a hurry or need to move quickly. Just to confirm my suspicions, I googled his name. I am pleasantly surprised to find all of your comments. I really appreciate all the time you took to post information on this scam.

I also got a reply to my Craiglist rental listing. The first email made me suspicious, but I replied, being purposely vague. I didn’t give out any details, and the second email definitely didn’t sound real. The contact I had on my email was Edward Laws.

we had two scammers with the same setup Robert Watson/Wallace and Derek Thorsen. The Phillip Lenox was a reference for Robert Watson/Wallace and had the exact same letter. We posted on craigs list Friday Feb 20th. It is a real scam.

I replied to a job listing for a nanny and his name is now Trevor Hightower. He asked for my name,address and phone #’s which I sent. I got suspious when him and his family was moving to the US, arriving on 8/5, and wanted to settle in but their belonging was still in the UK. It’s just some sick people in this world today. I should have KNOWN because of the grammar issues and the fact that there were NO comments about the place.
I have not cashed the check (and of course do not plan on it), but am I in any danger at this point? They have my name, address and telephone number and a copy of the draft lease (no financial data on that)?

The scam is that they send you a bogus money order for an additional amount. They in return want you to pay a third party the overage amount sent. This could be for interior design, furniture, etc. you pay this out of the funds they send , then find out that the check they sent you is bogus and now you are out the money. Its a retarded scam but people do fall for it. Even if you deposit their check your bank will usually charge you for the bounce. God forbid you send the funds out before the check clears, you would be out big time. Hope this explains the scam. Per my post on here I have a collection of these bogus money orders. I like to waste these guys time like they have wasted mine. Its pretty funny.

This is so insulting.. Thank God for this web site. I posted an apartment ad and received a reply (that is just like, almost all of the replys) in such a short amount of time, I could not believe it. And just like so many of you, I was almost duped to believe this individual. But for some strange reason.. and probably my wife, something did not site too well in the back of my head. Called my sister, my lawyer. She did not see anything wrong. But, still.. something did not sit just right. So, I went to google and found this site and all of you..
I guess the bottom line is this.. Thank all of you so very much.. It is so hard for me to believe people are like this..

Thanks so much for alerting me to this. I too posted a rental on Craigslist in Virginia and received a response from a Mark Phillip. I looked up the company and noted there was a VA Beach office but some distance from the rental location. It sounded suspicious for who furnishes a place based on dimensions sight un-seen. I appreciate you linking this scam with the company. The company should know about this and this con artist persecuted.

I just got this request and found this by accident. I was looking for the time difference and googled the company name to confirm time zone. I am very much aware of the “western union” scam. I was wondering very much so what this angle was. one red flag right away was this

that to me was silly. you don’t have an agreement without a signed contract and cash. Obviously, if you are a professional, you must insist on running the show and setting the terms.

There is a way to find out someone’s IP address and contact hosting companies to track people, no one is anonymous online, Gmail definitely can track him down so if anything ever happens, contacting the host always works!

I too, like all the others was almost fooled until I read this website. I received an email from a Greg Hilary Financials offering me a loan not based on credit or collateral…I emailed him back to find out the terms and conditions of the loan and more information. The email gave me some UK address and phone number…thank God for google.
These people are preying on people in hard financial times…please beware and do your research before accepting any loans with loose terms and conditions.
