- i got the same DR. Morgan for the last week trying to rent my house- good thing i checked and found that this man has done this many times. we went as for as where i was going to take my add off- so I am not sure why he does this? here is what he wrote:

Got the same emails off an ad I had on Craigslist for a rental apt. Here’s the text of emails. Emailed him back (before I googled the number), got a response, then I emailed and asked for proof of employment/etc and never heard back. Here are the emails:

I got the same Dr. Mike Morgan variety. It’s amazing how much of the text they copy and paste. It was virtually the same email as listed above with the same questions. I wanted to help this guy out and help him get settled with his moving. However, I sent an application and rental criteria to be filled out. I got suspicious when he replied that he agreed with the terms of the lease and wanted my contact info to “send me a deposit.” If he was truly a Doctor, he should have been able to read the document and know that it wasn’t a lease agreement. It really bothers me that they mention God in these scams. I believe God will judge them one day for their sins. They may not get caught while living, but they will eventually pay for the harm they are causing to people.

Yes, “dr cole morgan” is busy! Amazing that he gets away with the same scam for months. He must make it work with some trusting folks out there. Another site indicates that he has make this scam work with some people.

Okay. I fell for it and sent this guy a lease for his review and gave him our address for payment to be mailed. That is all the information he has. I am not sure what I should do to protect myself (considering the information I have given him) at this point.

He has a name and an address and a lease with our rental home address. That’s basically it. Anyone know what I should do?

Yes. My have fell for this guy just like him. I gave him our address and payment. We just made a police report about this guy and our family is hoping to get him. I know I’m not old enough this but i just wanted to help my dad catch this guy. I’m only 15 and I just don’t want other people to fall for this guy like my family did. So if you please could help us do this it would help.

DO NOT USE “CRAIGSLIST” TO RENT APARTMENTS!

I received this guy email and send him a rental application. He asked me for personal information and address where he can send a 2 month rent and security deposit. I wrote him that he needs to fill out a rental application and I need to check his credit score in order to proceed with the lease. He wrote me back by telling me where he can send a check.I had a feeling that I’m going to nowhere with this guy and I got tired of reading his nonsence. I wrote him that the house is rented out.I had no clue that he is doing it to so many people and some have fallen for his story.

I recently received the same SCAM here in the Northbay area of San Francisco. Thankfully, the returned e-mail I sent him does not include my name or address. All I asked him was the estimated arrival date? I think that the only way to catch this character is to contact the police, then set up a phoney business account at a local bank so that his “financier” in the U.S. can deposit the security deposit and the rent checks. This will establish a “paper trail” so that he can be found, and then arrested. I want to get the final laugh! Please read his e-mail as follows:

The good old Doctor is still at it. My realtor received the same e-mail over the past weekend as a result of an ad on Craigslist. However, by the time I googled it she had already sent an application and lease agreement with my adress on it. What is the ultimate goal? To get a bank account number?

Thans for this site! I was immediately suspicious about this guy because I got 2 emails almost simultaneously that said virtually the same thing. I responded to them that I needed references, and he’s replied a couple of times. I also found it very odd that he asked for information I had specifically already told him, and he said he planned to move in Sept 1 even though I specifically told him it wasn’t available until October 1. I was strongly suspicious anyway, but grateful to this site for confirming. I do wonder what the profit for him is – is it one of those large checks that you are supposed to deposit and then send the “leftovers” back to him? Hmmm…

Here’s what he does with the applications and leases people send to him: he works another scam with it, this time duping renters out of their hard-earned money! When you send him an application and a lease he’s got perfectly legit documents to send to a potential victim for his rental scam. This is the other end of the scam:

The scam is pretty simple, you go on craigslist and there’s the perfect rental for you. You inquire about the property and soon you are having a discussion with someone who is in another country for one reason or another and they’re renting their home (or helping friends do the same). They ask for an application and the application seems safe enough (no credit card numbers or social security numbers). You fill it out, and they ask you to send either the first month/security deposit or the entire payment for the year and they will send you the keys and all the paperwork you’ll need.

Of course, if you send that first monthly payment you’ll never see keys. Why? The scammer doesn’t own the property he’s renting.

SO, if you haven’t guessed already sending him your documents is a very VERY bad thing! You could find your good name being smeared, and maybe even get a visit from the police! I suggest if you’ve sent any documents to this guy, file a police report immediately! That way if anything happens in the future you’ll have that police report to refer folks to and it will document the fact that you’ve been the victim of a scam.

- David Flores was the name used to scam me. Scammer listed UK as his place of residence coming to US to work for an engineering firm for a year. Wished to rent an apartment on Craig’s List in SF Bay Area.

The United Kingdom’s +44…. phone numbers can be set to automatically transfer to anywhere in the world. Thus you can call a +44…… phone number in England and it can be answered by a Nigerian cell phone. You may get a big bill for the call.

Scammers often use Barrister and Doctor as a way to seem important. “Cole” seems to come up often as part of an E-mail name. We track the “Hay Scams” ( http://www.hay-scams.com )

The wording of these messages (measuring for furniture) seems to indicate that the scammer may be setting you up for a (google it) “Counterfeit check scam” where they will send you a Counterfeit Certified check, Counterfeit business check or many forms of Counterfeit Money orders and ask you to Western Union the excess over the rent, back to someone to ‘pay’ for the furniture. The wired money goes to a victim of a “work at home” scam who deducts 8 to 10% and immediately wires the remainder out of the country. The counterfeit checks bounce a month later and you are out the money that you wired away. The scammer needs your name, address and phone number so they can UPS or FedEx the counterfeit to you. In rare cases the counterfeit is mailed from England or Canada.

You can safely play along with the “Counterfeit check scam” until you get the bogus funds. You can back track the “tracking number” on the UPS or FedEx to find the US entry point of the package and it will normally have nothing to do with the ‘return address’. The package is most likely dropped in a ‘pre-paid’ street-side box or has been sent using a stolen UPS account number and thus the police can not find the person who has sent it. The only thing of any value on the package is the phone number shown in the upper left and it is occasionally false. Post the ‘return address’ phone number to the web at

http://800notes.com/ or http://whocallsme.com/

so others can find it and perhaps be spared becoming a victim.

Do not deposit the check or money order. Tell the scammer “The bank says the check is counterfeit” and the scammers will vanish, left with the feeling that his counterfeit supplier has sent out easy to spot forgeries. This is the only way we have found to ‘punish’ the scammer who is in Nigeria.

Dr. Mike Morgan got us too. Nov 5, 2009. I gave the location of the house but I’m glad I didn’t give anymore info. His Financier was to contact us and a furniture company was to supply the furniture so it would be in place when they arrived,in two weeks or sooner. I also called him on his cell +447031991767. I was to prepare a lease and e-mail it to him so he could look it over. I was not doing that until the financier contacted me. When I spoke with him I asked for the Financier’s name a contact person here in the states. He had a very heavy accent so I’m not sure what he said but he did not give me a name.

Now he uses “Dr. Jacob Cage” with dr.jacobcage@yahoo.com. His first email seemed innocent enough, simply asking a couple of follow ups to the ad. But his next email about the financier tipped me off. It sounded a lot like those “I’ll split the $10 million with you to help get the money out of my country”. So the financier alert made me notice the capitalized name/address of the hospital, as if cut and paste. And the employment snafu: sounding high class english by spelling out what would simply be put as US EPA. Thanks for posting

I received the same e-mail from “Dr. Morgan” in response to my Craig’s List ad. I was only somewhat suspicious, until his third or fourth message….the one about: “Can you help me out by allowing the furniture company in to deliver the furniture?”

I’m sure that if I had gone along with this I would have received a check for the amount of the security deposit and rent. Then, there would have been some “last minute mix-up” that would result in a request for me to mail a check the furniture company in order for them to deliver the furniture. For being so helpful, I would be generously rewarded. Since I had already received the payment in advance, it would seem as though there was no risk.

Unfortunately, my check to the the “Furniture Company” would be cashed; but the check from the “financier” would bounce about a month later and I’d be out the cost of the furniture (which would never be delivered, because there was no “Furniture Company”) and stuck with the bounced check fee from my bank. Just because your bank accepts a check and credits your account, it doesn’t mean that the check is legitimate. It usually takes some time for the check to “bounce.”

I cut the process off by asking that he provide copies of his Passport and Work Permit, something anybody intending to move to the U.S. to work would definitely need to have available.

- As of March 10, 2012, He’s still doing it!! I even called the number he listed with a calling card: 447024081502. A guy actually answered the phone (he must not have thought we in the states would actually call). I asked for Bar or David and he sounded caught off guard. He says “yes? Oh, HOld on!”..I could hear a loud tv if not 2 tv’s on the in background. Then, I could hear him pretending to ask his wife to turn down the tv or something. It was obvious he was scrambling for time. After about 2 minutes on hold. I hung up. I replied back to him asking if he was a scammer and he replied “Hell nope please I need your home” but it was about 4 days later.
  I’m so glad I never sent him my address, name or any other information. DO NOT SEND THIS GUY ANYTHNG

Due to the limited time that we have before our arrival,we are making arrangements with a furniture company to supply the home with furniture,so we will need you to provide us with the measurements of the living room and bedroom so that we can send it to the furniture company so that they can supply the unit with furniture that will fit in well. Yes – he’s still out there and he evens has a Linked In account from “Nigeria” which was my clue – maybe Linked In tracks location of set up. The name was Dr. James Aiken I believe and not knowing at first I did send a rental agreement but did not put my address on it for some reason I held back. I once saw an ad being run in our area for an estate property and they were renting it for $1800 a month – at first I thought they want a caretaker and that’s why they are charging such a low amount but later realized as the seller was getting tons of calls from prospective renters and we drove by being curious and there was someone living there!!! The other thing is they must have a tracking system because I literally got the message within 5 minutes of the posting the ad to Craigs List to my email! I replied the 2nd time sorry I don’t deal with rent scams and I reported you to Craigs List. I also have a suspicion early on and hit the link for report scam thru Craigs List but I wish there was someone to speak to. This person could be passing out the rental agreement and application making it appear that this is real and collecting deposits and rent from unsuspecting renters. They need to arrest this person.

I just received the same scam request for personal inforamtion to rent my home that was posted on creaigsllist. Beware of anyone stating he works for North Wickpark & St. Marks Hospital! I was first alerted by the broken english and researched the place of employment on the internet.
