Today there are 608,000 webpages that mention Craigslist rental scams. There have been 41 newspaper stories this week on Craigslist rental scams. And over 6,457 blogs have written about Craigslist rental scams.

The good news is we are starting to get the word out about rental scams. The bad news is, rental scams are continuing to increase and not just on Craigslist but across the internet.

We need to take action. We need to hit the scammers where it hurts the most, through economics.

  1. I was scammed by someone coming to lease my house from the UK working with Eli Lilly. Was going to send cashier check for more than deposit and monthly rental.

  2. Listing rental on Craiglist. Contacted by someone in the Netherlands “coming to the US” for fossil sales” Name was Luis Mila with a yahoo account

    • luismilao79 just responded as from the Netherlands to my new craigslist ad for a rental home in Florida. BEWARE!! They’re still at it!!!

  3. A person with the email richardwalt10@yahoo.com hijacked my ad in craigslist reduced the rent to an almost ridicoulous amount and obtained personal and credit infromation from a person applying to rent the house.

  4. I was hit by the eli lilly scam as well. luckely I only sent photos but no personal information. Are there more scams I should be looking out for.

    I replied back and this is what I received about 20 minutes later….

    Actually, I’ll be traveling to Guam next week for a seminar I have to attend and will be there till the middle of next month. I’ll be resuming the rent as soon as am through with the seminar. I’m glad to know there will be room for my car cos I’ve already booked the shipments and will be move as soon as am able to secure the rent by making up front payment to hold it. I’ll be talking to my financier, to also avoid mutual mistake, the check is not coming from me but from my financier as I have already applied for the relocation loan but yet to be granted… I will be checking back with my financier today, so I’ll urge you to kindly email me the name and address to send the check payment to , so as to meet up with the payment on time.. and don’t forget to email the picture to me latter today and I’ll also email mine to you soon

      • I got the same exact email too. It includes all the same information including the same phone number. I had actually responded to roselenetwist@aol.com and she sent me a check for 3500.00. Im not stupid I didnt cash the fake check and i sent her an email letting her know I knew it was a scam and havent heard from her since.So she is still at it!

    • Just got the same scam but by a different person representing an Apex Insurance Group. Was a good thing i checked this site.

      • We just got the same scam…identical email and the guy said he worked for Apex Insurance Group. He also wanted to send me a check and have us forward what was left to an interior decorator. This is crazy!!

      • I just got the same email!! I replied back w/the address and rent info, but fortunately did not give any personal info. I also use a googlemail email address for replying to Craigslist folks so that my personal address is kept that way! Glad I googled Apex Insurance Group (UK) and found this website.

      • I just got the same scam from Eric Herman who claimed to work for Apex Insurance Group UK. Thought I had rented my apartment in record time. Glad I checked this site. The email addresses were the same . Same former landlord and exact smae script! Beware. Someone should develop a program to trap these guys!

    • I just got a similar type email. Except for the name and amount, it was identical (see below). Thank you VERY MUCH for this posting. You’ve saved me a lot of trouble, I’m sure.

      Here’s how the scam works. They send you a check for x, ask you to withdraw y and send them the difference z. You go to your bank, do all the leg work and send them a check for z. Once they’ve cashed your check, check x bounces, and you’ve just lost z out of our bank account.

      • Eric Herman is still busy. Identical email other then the date (Dec 15 to move in) and the $ amounts. You don’t need to read it again.
        Has anyone tried to run a sting on these guys with law enforcement (guess it’s state Atty General) – find out who the decorator is and run the line back?

  7. “Larry Brown” as well as “Reverend Michael Williams” tried to get me to “rent” my apartment to them. Both wanting to overpay me and have me cut a check to the decorator/ furniture company. The text you have here is exactly the same as the one I received . I did not give them any personal information..I have not heard from the “Reverend” since I asked for personal references …

Due to the limited time that we have before our arrival, we are making arrangements with a furniture company to supply the home with furnitures,so we will need you to provide us with the the following:

    # Measurements of the living room and bedroom.

    # Picture viewing the living room and the bed room(s).

    # As regards the lease agreement and application, I want you to send it to me for my review. I will eventually have it filled and signed on my arrival in your place as I am of the opinion that such documents are best filled and signed physically by appending signatory at best physical. We can start the lease by asap and I will be doing a one year lease. You can prepare the

  14. Same scam, received purportedly from the UK and targeting Austin, TX. Comfort is know they’ll doing the same thing into their old age with nothing to show for it but a bad life. Time is the best revenge for people like this.

  16. Here is a question for all that have handled this scam, as I get this a couple times a week for any property I list through my management company. What would happen if they send you a check and you just cash it? I have just been curious.

    The cashiers check is fake. If you cash it, the bank will think it is real. After 2 days, the bank will know that the check is fake, and if you wired money back to the scammer within that time frame, you will be out the money.

    I also got the David Decker scam. The guy does now have my name, address, and phone #. I assume he’s not in it for the identity, just the hope that he’d get the fake check “forwarded”. Should I be overly concerned about the possibility of identity theft?

  21. These lazy crooks overseas or here in the United States are certainly limited in their scams. I got an email from a GORDON COLE whose email is g.cole1111@gmail.com claiming he is a researcher in England moving to the US and who wanted to rent my house listed on Craigslist. The deal was he would have $6500 sent over for rent deposits and wanted me to send the balance by Western Union to his decorator, a woman named SHAMIK SPANN, in South Carolina. I googled SHAMIK SPANN and she apparently is a black female listed in FACEBOOK. He gave me his current landlord’s name of JOSEPH WILLIAM who sent me an email praising his “tenant”. The $6500 check was a forgery according to the company named on the check. I knew it was a scam and wanted him to waste $23 for express mail to send the check and use it for evidence. Obviously, he would not fill out a rental application or credit check release form. He also pulled the same scam on another landlord or two according to the company. So beware of these names and scam.

      You must keep my house clean including the surrounding, you must know the way in which you use the stove so as to avoid fire outbreak,you must not disturb the neighbor. He structures his sentences as though he’s eastern european….. trying to sound good as an english speaking person. I was renting a furnished apd apartment and noticed his comment for a decorator who would furnish it. and I would also forward funds to his decorator fromt check he was to send to me. The english and punctuation were off as well. What a waste of time.

    I also got one yesterday from a Greg Stward “a Researcher from Wales” who does not appear anywhere on the Cardiff University website. After I responded that the apartment was still available, this was his reply, which had a few tipoffs to this being a scam:

    Maybe they can also find you a fully furnished room for a few years in beautiful San Quentin…you must visit there when you come to the US.

    The home is in great condition‚ which the pictures don’t do it justice. We know a lot of possible renters want to take a quick look at the property‚ regardless‚ our policy is not to divulge the address‚ as there are some lunatics in the world with bad intentions. The last time we gave out the address without verifying the prospective tenant the place was vandalized. We wouldn’t want that to happen again. I’ll confirm what you probably already know…this property is gorgeous! A home like this would typically go for much more‚ but again‚ I need to lease it quickly‚ which is why the lease rate is a tremendous value.

    If you are serious to set up a scheduled visit, you will need a copy of your credit score. The unaffiliated website attatched has reviews of different free trial credit score. The scores are insignificant – we realize many folks have had foreclosures‚ bankruptcy‚ etc. For insurance purposes‚ we are required to have a report on file from every prospective tenant and is absolutely required. I’m sick of tire-kickers, people who are just looking around and not serious about renting, so please don’t waste my time! No offence!

After posting our rental on craigslist, I received an email today from Thomas Gordon (chaottnstead@yahoo.com), with the same story (works for Apex Insurance in the UK and coming to our state and interested in our property). I did email back with more pictures and info about the property, then decided to Google it a few hours later. Came to this site and I can see that these people have been targeting landlords for some time. Thank you for this site..lets stop this scam!!!

I got this email that had NOTHING to do with a welding shop and mentioned exactly NOTHING about the neighborhood this person supposedly lived in, in the area. (Bellingham and Skagit) That would be because “she” DOES NOT ACTUALLY HAVE A HOME TO RENT THERE.

    Started getting suspicious after “her dad” sent a check very quickly. Also, since she claimed to be half French I had responded in French but her reply acknowledged nothing I said, and it doesn’t quite sound like the type of broken English a native French speaker would speak. So started googling and found this page. She hadn’t gotten to the point of asking me to send anyone money, but there was a car delivery involved.
