Went through the entire process with this guy James Cannon – word for word for a rental unit advertised on Craig’s List. Got suspicious when he wanted me to wire transfer funds to his decorator Shala Hart in Columbus, SC – I live in Vermont. The Vt Attorney General says there is nothing that can be done but suggests getting the word out so that people will not waste time and not get caught by this person.

Wow, I am currently advertising my home for rent on Craig’s List. Today I received an email from a James W Cannon his email address: jamesmcannon173@googlemail.com. The email arrived in my junk mail folder but, since it was craig’s list I moved it to safe. The email was just like the letters listed above. I answered the first email by asking him to tell me a little about himself…thus when I received the letter like those above. I did not answer the second email. I immediately googled the company he was being represented by and it led me here. Thank you so much for such a website. This James Cannon is now blocked from making contact with me. By the way, I live in East TN…so this guy is bad news and still alive and well. Once again, I thank you for the heads up!

I received this scam too. I asked him to give me the location, phone #, and address of his “state” contact. I would then have the police dept verify existence of said business. Thank you for this posted warning. What happens in this event is the bank will cash this check and when it is found out that it is fraud you will have to pay the bank back. So you would be out the amount you forwarded to his “decorator” plus what you will owe the bank. Thanks to this website, hopefully it will go now further. I did answer second letter with name, address, and phone#. I too would like to know if he can do anything with this info. I quess he could have gotten the same information from the phone book.

We received an email response to an apartment for rent that we listed on Craigslist and within 2 days of posting the apartment we had a response from James Cannon who works for AXA in the UK and would be relocating to the US.
He provided us with his “current” landlord’s name which we contacted for a reference and the landlord gave an awesome reference. I asked him for verification of his employment. He also was having an “Interior Decorator” who would be handling his furnishings etc.
The first red flag was that he would forward us a check and we would in turn forward the remainder to the Interior Decorator.
I am so glad that I googled his name and found this website.
Someone needs to stop him before he rips off more unsusupecting, trusting people!

I was communicating with the same scamer in July 2009 except he used the email richywilliams01@gmail.com. Same british type addresses. The link is Shala N. Hart in Columbia, SC. That was the person identified by ritchey in later emails to send the money back to via western union.
I spotted the scam when I got a hit 10 minutes after posting my rental on craigslist. I played along just for fun, even got the $5500 check that was sent via UPS next day air. That cost the scamer $23 ROFLMAO.
The check is on a bogus Bank of America account out of Irvine Ca..1-PMART Network USA LTD. I even called Bank of America and they told me they were already aware of the scam.
It was fun.
